Female ferrets are induced ovulators (i.e. they lack a biological clock), so for a female ferret to go into heat, her body needs to sense that a male is around. This conserves energy, why produce an egg for nothing?
The problem is this: if the she-ferret enters heat, she’ll stay in it until she’s either laid, spayed, or dead- meaning that the all her energy gets programmed into “produce an egg mode” until a certain signal comes along to switch it off. If she has to maintain this activity for any length of time, it becomes hazardous to her health. After about a month of waiting around for whoopie, significant health problems arise, including aplastic anemia and estrogen toxicity.
