Nevermind the cat, let’s talk about noodles and how they compare to breathing. Vermicelli( شعريه ,面线, lit. little worm) is thinner than spaghetti and made from durum wheat. Cats love vermicelli.
The first mention of vermicelli comes from a 15th century cookbook entitled De arte Coquinaria per vermicelli e maccaroni siciliani written and illustrated by the naked celebrity chef of the day, Martino da Como. The next huge leap for Vermicelli came in 1895, when immigrant Domenico DeDomenico started a family noodle business in San Francisco, California. Domenico’s daughter-in-law, Lois, made a big hit in the kitchen when she fused an Armenian “rice-a” pilaf recipe from her landlord with the Domenico family’s -roni. The rest is history Americana.
In 1986 the Quaker Oats company acquired Rice-a-roni and made it a Y2K staple. Wilford Brimley, chief spokesperson for the Quakers, apparently loves two things more than oatmeal- vermicelli and cock-fighting.
